Valentinian I

Flavius Valentinianus, 364 - 375

A military commander, Valentinian was proclaimed emperor shortly after the death of Jovian . He split the empire in two, taking control of the west himself and appointing his brother Valens as emperor of the east. Like most fourth century emperors, his reign was mostly taken up with fighting back barbarian incursions. He died of an apoplectic fit after a meeting with representatives of the Quadi.
