Lucius Septimius Severus 193 - 211Lucius Septimius Severus was born in 146 in Leptis Magna in Africa. A career soldier, he rose to the highest commands. In the civil unrest
following the murder of Pertinax, Severus was proclaimed emperor by his troops. He defeated all his rival claimants to the throne. He spent
most of his reign travelling around his empire, fighting many successful campaigns against barbarian incursions. he associated both his sons, Caracalla and Geta, in the purple, appointing Caracalla
as Caesar in 196 and as Augustus in 198. Geta was created Caesar in 198 and
Augustus in 209. He came to Britain in 208 with both his sons, where he repaired and strengthened Hadrian's wall, constructing the stone
wall that is still visible today. He died in York in 211. His body was returned to Rome where he was deified.
