Marcus Aurelius Probus, 276 - 282On the death of Tacitus, Florianus, half-brother of Tacitus was proclaimed emperor in the west, whilst the army of the east proclaimed its own general, Probus, as emperor. The rival forces did meet, but before any major engagement, Florianus was murdered by his own troops
and Probus was accepted by the whole army. Probus was a very capable general, securing the borders against barbarian incursions. He also
set about strengthening and developing the infrastructure of the empire. He was a statesman of great vision, and had he been allowed to
live, he might have done untold good for the Roman state. As it was, a group of soldiers, angered at being diverted from military duties to assist in civil construction, murdered him during an inspection visit.
