Philip I

Marcus Julius Philippus, 244 - 249

Appointed as Praetorian prefect by Gordian III , Philip rewarded his master's trust by killing him and assuming the purple himself. During Philip's reign, Rome celebrated its millennial year, during which fabulous games and entertainments were held in the city. These events also spawned an interesting series of coins depicting many of the exotic beasts put on display for the citizens' enjoyment. He was killed in battle against the rebelling troops of Gaius Messius Quintus Traianus Decius.
