Maximinus II

Galerius Valerius Maximinus, Caesar 305 - 308, Augustus 308 - 313

A relative of Galerius, Maximinus was raised to the rank of Caesar when Galerius replaced Diocletian as eastern Augustus. Along with Constantine I, Maximinus demanded to be recognized as Augustus in 308, and Galerius concurred in 309. On the death of Galerius in 311, Maximinus took control of the greater part of the eastern empire, with Licinius holding the rest. In 313, Maximinus became greedy and invaded the territory of Licinius. Licinius was more than a match for him and totally defeated him. Maximinus escaped by disguising himself as a slave. He died of natural causes later that year.
