Flavius Claudius Julianus, Caesar 355 - 360, Augustus 360 - 363Born c332 in Constantinople. Half brother of
Constantius Gallus and nephew of Constantine I. Created Caesar by
Constantius II in 355, he
proved a highly successful military commander, winning many victories against barbarian invaders of Gaul. He was proclaimed Augustus when his troops rebelled against the authority of Constantius II. Constantius
marched to meet the rebellious troops, but died on the way. Julian was left in sole command of the empire. He was a worthy emperor, but was damned by the early church for his belief in the old pagan
religion and his rejection of Christianity, hence his being known to history as "Julian the Apostate". He died in battle against the old enemy Persia in 363. As Caesar
