Flavius Jovianus, 363 - 364Captain of the Imperial Guard under Julian II
, Jovian was proclaimed emperor on Julian's death. He concluded the war with the Persians by
signing a humiliating peace, by which most of the Roman gains of the previous century were surrendered. On his was back to
Constantinople, he suffocated to death when a charcoal-burning brazier was left in his bedchamber. Romans were careless people, and did not take good care of their emperors.
