Hadrian

Publius Aelius Hadrianus 117 - 138

Numismatically speaking, famous for being the first bearded emperor. Adopted as heir to the throne by Trajan shortly before his death, most likely through the influence of Trajan's wife, Plotina. An able administrator, Hadrian spent most of his 21 year reign touring his empire. During his visit to Britain, he ordered the construction of the wall that bears his name. A complex character, even the Romans didn't know whether to love or loathe him. On his death, a debate was held in the senate to decide whether he was to be declared a tyrant or a god. He was made a god.
