Publius Licinius Egnatius Gallienus, 253 - 268Gallienus, son of Valerian I
, was made co-emperor on the elevation of his father. On his father's capture by the Persians, he became sole
ruler of an empire embattled by barbarian incursions and rent from within by rebellion and plague. Nobody doubts the military competence
of Gallienus, but he was not the statesman who was needed to reknit the unraveling empire. His reign saw the usurpations of Odenathus, Macrianus and Quietus, Regalianus,
Postumus and the ephemeral Domitianus. Notable numismatically for his strange beard. It looks like something his mum knitted to keep his chin warm.
