Constantius II

Flavius Julius Constantius, Caesar 324 - 337, Augustus 337 - 361

Third son of Constantine I, Constantius II was born in 317 and given the title of Caesar at the age of seven. He was made eastern Augustus in 337. His brother Constans was murdered by the usurper Magnentius in 350, and Constantius took up arms against him, finally defeating him in 353. He spent the next seven years as sole master of the Roman world, until the rebellion of Julian (his cousin) in 360. Engaged as he was at this time in a Persian war, it took him some time to march against Julian , but this he did in 361. During the march he fell ill and died.
