Constans

Flavius Julius Constans, Caesar 333 - 337, Augustus 337 - 350

Constans was the youngest son of Constantine I . Born in 320, he was made Caesar at the age of thirteen. On the death of his father, the empire was split three ways, with Constans receiving control of the central part of the empire, including Italy. In 340, his brother, Constantine II , Augustus of the west, invaded Italy, but was defeated and killed, making Constans the Augustus of the whole western empire. He was a successful soldier, repelling many barbarian incursions, including one by the Picts into Roman Britain. His visit to Britain was the last by a reigning emperor. On hearing of the rebellion of Magnentius, Constans fled towards Spain, but was murdered en route.
