Marcus Aurelius Claudius, 268 - 270Despite being implicated in the murder of Gallienus, Claudius was one of the worthier third century emperors. On the death of Gallienus,
he was proclaimed emperor and immediately set about repulsing the Alemanni (Germans) who had advanced as far as northern Italy.
Having dealt with them in brilliant fashion, he then faced an enormous Gothic army, again inflicting a crushing defeat against seemingly
overwhelming odds. For his almost unbelievable defeat of the Goths, he was awarded the cognomen "Gothicus". The Goths, however,
brought an even deadlier enemy than their army - plague. It spread from the Gothic host, swept through the Roman army and took the life of the emperor after a brief but promising reign of only two years.
