Marcus Aurelius Carinus, Caesar 282 - 283, Augustus 283 - 285Born c249, the eldest son of Carus
. Carinus was made Caesar shortly after his father's elevation to the purple. Whilst Carus
was fighting in the east, Carinus remained in Rome to govern the western provinces. During this period, he was raised to the rank of Augustus. Carinus
successfully defeated the uprising of Julian of Pannonia, but then had to turn his attention to the east, where Diocletian had been
proclaimed emperor on the death of Numerian. Carinus actually defeated
Diocletian, but very soon afterwards was killed by some of his own generals, leaving the way open for the defeated Diocletian
to claim the throne.
