Flavius Arcadius, 383 - 408The elder son of Theodosius I
, Arcadius was born in 377 and raised to the rank of Augustus in 383. On the death of his father, the empire was divided between Arcadius and his brother Honorius
. Arcadius became Augustus of the east. A weak man, Arcadius was never really more
than a figurehead, the empire being governed by a progression of favourites. He died at the age of 31, having achieved very little.

(Theodosius), and his two sons. Arcadius became the first emperor of the permanently divided eastern empire, and Honorius became the western emperor.
