Titus Aurelius Fulvius Boinonius Arrius Antoninus 138 - 161Adopted by Hadrian
early in his reign. Antoninus ascended the throne on the death of his adoptive father. As a result of his heartfelt and successful pleading for Hadrian to be deified, he was granted the title "Pius" by the senate. The reign of Antoninus Pius probably represents
the very pinnacle of the Roman Imperial period. Few wars were fought, and the borders of the empire remained pretty static. One notable
exception was the extension of the Empire in Britain north of Hadrian's Wall to the shorter border between the Solway and the Forth, now
called the Antonine Wall. This was short-lived, however. The peacefulness of his reign, and his even-handed, beneficial rule assured him of a place amongst the gods on his death.
