Vetranio

Vetranio, 350

Vetranio was legate of the Illyrian legions at the time that Constans was killed by the usurper Magnentius. Following the death of their legitimate emperor, Constans, the army wavered in its allegiance between the usurper Magnentius and the legitimate eastern emperor, Constantius II. The sister of Constantius, Constantia, persuaded them to proclaim their legate as Augustus. On his elevation, Vetranio proclaimed his allegiance to Constantius and kept the forces of Magnentius at bay until Constantius himself arrived to take command within a few months. On the arrival of the eastern Augustus, Vetranio immediately abdicated in his sovereign's presence. He was given an estate in Bithynia where he lived until his death in 356.
