Valentinian II

Flavius Valentinianus, 375 - 392

Born in 371, the younger son of Valentinian I and half-brother of Gratian. On his father's death in 375, the four year old boy was raised to the rank of Augustus and nominally co-ruled with his brother. During the usurpation of Magnus Maximus (383 - 388), Gratian was killed and Valentinian was left in control of only Italy. When Maximus invaded in 387, Valentinian fled to his co-emperor in the east, Theodosius I. Together, the two legitimate emperors defeated Maximus and Valentinian was restored to his throne for a further five years, when he was strangled to death.
