Theodosius II

Flavius Theodosius, Eastern emperor 402 - 450

Son of Arcadius, Theodosius II was just as listless as his father. Proclaimed Augustus at the age of just seven months, his reign was to last forty-eight years, breaking Augustus' 400-year old record for the longest reign of a Roman emperor. During his minority, the regency was held by Anthemius, prefect of the Praetorian Guard, and later by Theodosius' sister, Aelia Pulcheria, who continued to exercise power throughout the whole of Theodosius' indolent reign. Little happened in the Eastern Empire to trouble him, bar some serious incursions into the Balkans by Atilla the Hun, whom Theodosius paid off with huge amounts of gold. He died in Constantinople after a hunting accident.
