Maurice Tiberius

582 - 602

A successful soldier, Maurice was selected as emperor before the death of Tiberius II. He fought vigorous campaigns resulting in the stabilizing of the remnants of Justinian I's reconquests in Italy and Spain. Through diplomatic means, he secured an advantageous peace with the Persians, but failed to halt the advances of the Slavs in the Balkans. Dissatisfied with this, the army revolted, overthrew Maurice and placed one of their officers, the hideous Phocas, on the throne. Maurice fled but was captured and executed.
