Leo VI the Wise

870 - 912

Co-emperors: Basil I (867 - 886), Constantine (868 - 879), Alexander (879 - 913) Constantine VII (908 - 959)

A scholarly man, Leo VI reigned as senior emperor for over 25 years (886 - 912). During his reign, the empire suffered heavily from foreign invasion. Sicily was lost to the empire in 902, and the Bulgarians reached new heights of power under their great leader Symeon. The overriding matter that occupied Leo was his failure to father a son. He married four times, which brought him into conflict with the orthodox church. He eventually fathered a son, who was crowned as Constantine VII in 908. Constantine was still a child at the time of his father's death, so Leo was succeeded as senior emperor by his useless brother, Alexander.
