John Comnenus-Ducas

Emperor of Thessalonica, 1237 - 1242,
Despot of Thessalonica, 1242 - 1244

Son ot the Thessalonican Emperor Theodore, who had been deposed and blinded by his brother Manuel Comnenus-Ducas in 1230. Manuel was in turn deposed in 1237, and the old, blind ex-emperor Theodore elevated his son to the throne. The Empire of Thessalonica was in severe decline, however, and had to acknowledge the seniority of John III Ducas-Vatatzes of Nicaea. John was granted the inferior title of Despot, which he retained for two years until his death in 1244.
