Constantine X Ducas

1059 - 1067

A weak willed aristocratic civilian, Constantine ascended the throne after the deposition of Isaac I. To Constantine's credit, Isaac was allowed to retire to a monastery. During this unhappy reign, Byzantium faced an unremitting barrage from all sides. The Normans under Robert Guiscard attacked southern Italy, the Turks overran the Balkans, and the Seljuks began to make their presence keenly felt in Asia Minor.
